Norman Reynaert

Born in Wolverhampton, he served as a Private in the 9th Battalion DLI from 1941 fighting in North Africa at Mersa Matruh, El Alamein and Mareth.

He was taken prisoner on 27 June 1942 at Mersa Matruh - the day that Adam Wakenshaw gained his posthumous Victoria Cross - but escaped on the march a few hours later and rejoined his battalion. He later fought in Sicily and Normandy.

In 1948, he made a scrapbook of his experiences in the DLI. This is now held at Durham County Record Office as part of the Regimental Archive.
